Standing Stones in Yorkshire (North) The stones are located close by a trail on the eastern slope of Shaw End, a drainage area that feeds into Busco Beck at the western end of Glaisdale Swang. One a substantial and to me quite impressive tapered stone slab (SS1) stands out in the landscape about 160 feet to the south west of its much smaller neighbour (SS2) which tends to be overlooked.
Standing Stone SS1 at NZ 75085 05817 is NYMNP ‘HER’ number 7163 which describes it as prehistoric (PRE 43AD). My rough measurements make it about 6½ ft tall, with its northerly and southerly faces about 3 ft wide towards the top tapering down to 2 ft at the bottom, it is about 15 inches wide. It stands in a hollow and on its southerly face, eastern side about ¾ up is inscribed what looks to be the letter H lying on its side.
Standing Stone SS2 at NZ 75124 05843 is NYMNP ‘HER’ number 7164 which describes it as prehistoric (PRE 43AD). My rough measurements make it about 2½ ft tall, with its east and west faces about 3 ft wide. Its south face is 14 inches wide tapering to 10 inches at its north face.
Stone SS3 at NZ 75103 05843 – About 100ft to the north east of SS1 and about 50ft to the west of SS2 is what appears to be a stone slab prostrate on the ground or maybe its just an outcrop? However it seems incongruous in the landscape, this is not an area of the moor where there are lots of stones exposed, it is swampy and boggy in parts and the whole area acts as a drain into Busco Beck. Just a fleeting thought but I wonder if this is a stone slab, if it once stood erect. It is about 6ft long and 2½ ft wide.
