Round Barrow(s) in Yorkshire (North)

Sited on a saddle on the southern end of Danby Rigg is a bronze age flat topped barrow with a large hollow towards its north western side which is thought to have been the reason from which it derived its name, WOLF PIT

The barrow is quite large with official records stating that it is 35m in diameter with its height varying between 1 and 2m, the hollow alone is 7m in diameter and 1.5m deep.

Whilst the barrow is scheduled as an ancient monument the HERR indicates that some field investigators in the past have cast doubts on its veracity, specifically in 1974 where a field investigator declared it ‘not an antiquity’ and in 1998 where the field investigator labelled it only as a possible round barrow. My layman’s gut feeling, I tend to agree with the field investigators for no other reason that it doesn’t ‘feel’ right, or to me, even ‘look’ right for that matter.

Wolf Pit (Danby Rigg) submitted by johndhunter : Wolf Pit round barrow at NZ 70514 03596 – Viewed looking easterly, October 2013. Anecdote: Top right of the image on the skyline is a gamekeeper. On this occasion when approaching the barrow I walked into the middle of a grouse shoot causing pandemonium . For my safety they dragged me into a grouse butt until the shoot had passed by, a very interesting experience. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Wolf Pit (Danby Rigg) submitted by johndhunter : Wolf Pit round barrow at NZ 70514 03596 – A view of the hollow in the top of the barrow looking towards Danby Head, October 2013. As per my comment in the previous image where I stated that I had walked into the middle of a grouse shoot, gamekeepers / beaters can still be seen walking away, towards the top left of the picture.
