Obtrusch submitted by johndhunter : Obtrusch in June 2016, looking at the collapsed grouse butt, northern end. Note: The two upright stones with the recumbent stone on top, at the right of the image are part of the cairns outer kerb and the grouse butt was built on top of this. According to Historic England this has similarities to false portals built into some chambered cairns in Scotland (Vote or comment on this photo)
Round Cairn in Yorkshire (North)

There are two round cairns at this location, one known as Obtrusch which is prominent the other smaller one centred 16m to the South East is barely discernible. Any photo I took of this smaller one just looked like you were looking at the ground, so ended up not bothering with it. Note: A drystone grouse butt, now more or less collapsed was built over the north western part of the prominent cairn known as Obtrusch prior to 1930. Full details of these cairns can be found in Historic England List Entry List Entry Number 1020376.

As regards the prominent cairn known as Obtrusch there are variations in the spelling of this name and its other names. Frank Elgee in his 1930 book Early man in NE Yorkshire Pages 70, 71 calls it Obtrush or Hobtrush Rook; he tells us that Rook comes from the old Norse hraukr which means a pile or heap of anything, That Obtrush or Hobtrush was the name of a local supernatural being akin to an elf or hobgoblin. So in reality the cairn is being called a “goblins heap”.
