Skelton Cross
Skelton Cross submitted by johndhunter : The Whipping Post (Skelton Cross) at NZ 65528 18871 – East Face, October 2019. The two remaining iron straps on the post can be seen, one at the top of this, the east face and the other at the top to the left of this on the south face. The person to be whipped was probably tied to these straps (Vote or comment on this photo)
Located within the village at Town Green. though locally sometimes called Skelton Cross Green, it was once at the heart of the village. However due to expansion and development beginning in the mid 19C and continuing to this day it has now found itself at the western edge of the village.

This is Pastscape Monument 28265 which tells us that it is the remains of a 14C market cross 2.0m high and 0.3m square, slightly tapering with chamfered corners. There were originally four iron straps, of unknown purpose, on the sides near the top, but two are now missing. There is no trace of a socket stone.

If you asked a resident where the cross was, they would probably point you to the war memorial next to it because this cross is actually known locally as the Whipping Post, so it doesn’t take too much to figure out what the iron straps were probably for. Also according to an article in a 1906 Parish Magazine the village stocks stood close by “within living memory” See HERE for source information. Public whipping for women ceased in 1817 and for men in 1830.
