Chappers60 visited on 24th Nov 2024 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 4 A henge - in my opinion - with a single entrance, one bank and ditch remaining. An outer bank and ditch appears to have been mostly destroyed by ploughing but what remains now protected by fencing. On site appears more circular than rectangular. Good access in winter.

PeterJMayhew visited on 14th Oct 2021 - their rating: Cond: 4 Amb: 2 Access: 4 I visited this as part of a round walk of Ampleforth but was very disappointed. Considering the size and decent condition of the site, it is clearly not appreciated locally: it's in a fenced area in the middle of a crop field. The field was clearly moorland some decades ago. The crop field detracts from the ambience a lot. There was no access path, although a couple of signs showed where to walk across it. There is a layby where you can park a car on the nearby road. There is a gate into the site through the fence, but this was overgrown with grass and nettles and it was hard work to open and then bash through the nettles and brambles into the site. Inside the site was overgrown, and I was clearly the first person to enter for some time. Inside, the ditch and banks were interesting but I didn't feel inclined to linger: is was a forlorn place. The site could be considerably enhanced for visitors with a better access path, some mowing and weeding, and some information panels. It deserves better. Lots of potential but needs realizing.

Average ratings for this site from all visit loggers: Condition: 3.5 Ambience: 3 Access: 4

Ancient Village or Settlement in Yorkshire (North)

The Northern Antiquarian (TNA) features a page for this enclosure / settlement - see their entry for Studfold Ring, Ampleforth, North Yorkshire, which includes directions for finding this site, together with a photograph, an image of the 1856 OS map showing the location of the enclosure, together with descriptions from 20th century reference material. TNA adds it is thought to have been constructed in the Bronze Age, being "the finest enclosure type of earthwork in the district." Hayes describes it as: "roughly quadrangular, some 54 yards across, rampart to rampart, with internal ditch 12ft wide and in places still 4ft in depth. The rampart is 24-26ft wide and 9-10ft high above the bottom of the ditch. It is of earth and rubble with an entrance 9ft wide on the ESE. One gets the impression that the central area is a raised platform above the level of the surrounding moor."

The site is scheduled as Historic England List ID 1004913, which contains little information as it was generated from an Old County Number.

These earthworks are also recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 56760, the summary of which reads: "Small earthwork enclosure consisting of an inner ditch and outer bank with a single east-facing entrance. Possibly a hengiform monument or Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age stock enclosure. The freshness of the earthworks indicate it has been restored in the Medieval period, probably as a horse coraal as suggested by the name Studfold. Scheduled."

Studfold Ring (Ampleforth) submitted by PeterJMayhew : 14th October 2021. The outer fence and access gate to the ring, on the eastern side, opposite the wood and path along the field. The gate was not locked but was overgrown and hard to lift open. The thick undergrowth then needed to be forced through to gain access, which was a bit of a struggle. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Studfold Ring (Ampleforth)
Studfold Ring (Ampleforth) submitted by PeterJMayhew : 14th October 2021. Studford Ring from the nearby road, looking across the crop field. To access, a path along the left of the field then led to a short hop across the field to the edge of the fence around the ring, where there was a heavy gate which could in theory be opened: there was no lock on it. However it was overgrown and hard to lift.
