Brightwell Round Barrow at Wittenham Clumps is one of the more visible parts of the Dorchester-on-Thames prehistoric landscape, there is much still under the surface to be rediscovered.

Prehistoric Dorchester-on-Thames – Excavation Open Days

Sun 17 July 10.00–16.00

Oxford Archaeology are organising a three week excavation near Dorchester-on-Thames to investigate a cursus and barrow, part of a large and impressive prehistoric ritual landscape. The excavation will use volunteers from the local community.

Visit the excavation, see artefacts from local digs and have experts identify your finds.

Site tours will be organised to show not only the the finds from the excavation but to give people an understanding of the wider landscape within which the finds sit, and an understanding of the process of archaeological research and excavation.

Location: Burcot Car Boot Field, St Berinsfield Roundabout, A4074. A4074, Oxford To Henley Road.

Is there a winter solstice sunrise alignment from the top of Castle Hill?

Brightwell Barrow is a wonderful place - like an outdoor church. I love to spend time nearby. Sadly, the farmer who owns the land won't let walkers close to the top of the Barrow.
Nevertheless, it is well worth a walk past and a stop to rest and breathe the sacred air.

It is indeed a lovely place, and easily accessed on foot from Castle Mound, Wittenham Clumps. But if you come on a cold day as I last did, be well wrapped up as the wind really blows up there and can quickly chill you to the bone!

A pleasant afternoon can be spent walking around the Wittenham Clumps near Dorchester in Oxfordshire, which are now largely a well looked after nature reserve. As well as the usual Castle Hill and Round Hill, Brightwell Barrow can also be taken in, either by walking around the fields from castle hill, or by taking the footpath up from near Highlands Farm.

While I was there, March 2004, the field around the barrow had recently been ploughed, leaving a nice large margin around the barrow, which is obviously cared for, unlike many. The Barrow itself is not particularly well defined, other than by the trees growing on it, and has been well destroyed in the past, and has an old trig point built at the southern edge. It was nice to see daffodils flowering on the barrow, and other floral tributes left up there.

Within the ploughed field were many bits of interesting stone and pottery, as well as lots of tile. This whole area is very rich in ancient remains. The views are splendid.
