cliffrich visited on 5th Dec 2019 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 5 Access: 2 Roughly a 30min walk uphill from the road but worth it when you get there! Three nicely surviving examples (approx 2-3mtrs high and 20-30mtr dia) which, however, have been excavated and, as usual, has ruined the tops of all three. They are close together but you can't see them until you are near due to the brow of the hill. Excellent ambience - the nicest I have come across on the Island so far, and I felt that I was only too welcome to visit, and I could have stayed all day meditating among them. The areas surrounding the barrows have lumps and suspicious rises in the ground so there may be many more flattened barrows (the site, after-all, is recorded as a Cemetery rather than three individual barrows!). The Ventnor Golf Club is nearby, again with suspicious rises in the ground. All-in-all well worth a visit especially if you want to contact the ancestors.

Week Down Barrows
Week Down Barrows submitted by RingPaw : Northernmost barrow of three. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Three barrow cemetery, just to the south-west of the bridleway that runs along the ridge of Week and Stenbury Downs on the Isle of Wight.

The southern barrow, furthest from the bridleway, is the largest, partially covered by gorse bushes. Across the valley to the north is situated the cemetery on Luccombe Down; the lone barrow of 'Lowtherville' is about 500m to the east.

The barrows are on private land - you need to duck under the sheep fence for a closer look, although the mounds are visible from the bridleway.

Update July 2024: For more information on this site, see the Historic England Entry ID 1010004, "Three bowl barrows 540m east of Week Farm: part of a round barrow cemetery on Week Down". Just to the north, another bowl barrow is recorded as ID 10010003.
