The remains of a round barrow built on top of an outcrop of rock called Stone Ruck on old OS maps. Around this outcrop there also lots of separate earth fast boulders lying around. This term Stone Ruck is used quite often in North Yorkshire to denote outcrops / piles of boulders/ large stones etc. It is my understanding that the term ruck / rook comes from the Old Norse “hraukr” which means a pile or heap of anything. (Source: Frank Elgees 1930 book “Early man in NE Yorkshire” page 71)
This is Historic England List Entry Number 1010529 which tells us that it is an earth and stone mound standing 1m high. It is round in shape, is 10m in diameter and that it has a modern stone cairn built on top of it. The modern stone cairn was built on top of a hollowed out centre but has since collapsed and filled the void, so that there are lots of stones lying around on top of the mound. This now gives the impression at first glance that you are looking at the top of a round cairn.
