Marker Stone in Yorkshire (North)
Six C18 boundary stones one of which is prehistoric in origin which I have numbered 1 to 6 that run close by a modern day shooters track. All are part of a much longer line string that runs across this moor and not all stones are actually on Black Ridge but the term has been used for ease of reference, see uploaded sketch map.
Referring to the uploaded sketch map, details of the stones are as below with map references from my gps. HER (Historic Environment Record) designation numbers are from the NYMNPA (North York Moors National Park Authority)
Stone 1 at SE 51403 97926 – HER 9397: It stands just to the south of the track at the western end and is a well worn uneven rectangular shaped monolith, it looks to me older than its C18 designation.
Stone 2 at SE 51493 97865 - Her 3321: Named on historic OS maps as the Chair Stone such as this 1895 OS MAP. When the map opens go to the centre then track left until you see the named Chair Stone. It stands on a bend in the boundary line and is a short distance to the south of the modern day shooters track and according to the HER is of a prehistoric origin (standing stone?), it is shaped like a high backed table chair.
Stone 3 at SE 51892 97994 – HER 5732: It is a well masoned squared monolith with an arched top which to me looks more C19 than its C18 designation. It stands just to the south of the track. It has the letter M engraved on its southerly face which stands for Manners the family name of the Duke of Rutland, whose estate (Snilesworth) this stone once marked. The northerly face has the letter A engraved upon it. This may stand for the Marquess of Ailesbury, though the family name was Brudenell-Bruce one time owners of the Whorlton Castle and Swainby Estate, whose southern boundary this stone once marked.
Stone 4 at SE 52072 98051 – HER 5733: A worn rectangular shaped monolith, with a worn arched top. It stands very close to the track on the south side.
Stone 5 at SE 52421 98173 – HER 5734: Another well masoned squared monolith with an arched top which is probably C19 rather than its C18 designation. It has an M engraved on its southerly side and though I didn’t make a note it probably has an A engraved on its northerly side as per other masoned stones in this line string.
Stone 6 at SE 52535 98214 – HER 5735: Actually two stones, just to the south of the track, a worn older probably C18 roughly squared, slim upright stone and a shorter stubby well masoned, probably C19 stone next to it. Again the masoned stone has an M engraved on its southerly face and as per stone 5 probably has an A engraved on its northerly face.
Boundaries:
1: Today(2024) the stones marks the boundary between the unitary authorities of Hambleton to the north and Ryedale to the south as well as the civil parishes of Whorlton to the north and Hawnby to the south.
2: In earlier times at least pre 1832 and probably around the time the masoned stones were erected they marked the boundary between the ancient parish of Whorlton and the township of Snilesworth within the ancient parish of Hawnby. It should also be noted that there have been other boundary changes since now and then. For example Snilesworth was a civil parish in its own right between 1894 and 1974 and was part of Helmsley Rural District and at the same time Whorlton civil parish was part of Stokesley Rural District, whose boundaries the stones would have also marked.
3: The stones also at one time marked the boundary between the Whorlton Castle Estate and the Snilesworth Estate. However though I am not sure about this I believe this has now changed and it would appear that the Snilesworth Estate now includes those grouse moors to the north of the boundary line at this point in the line string.
