Turf Maze in Hampshire

The dating of turf mazes is problematical and controversial. Current opinion tends toward a Mediaeval date but often re-cut since. They are not usually a "maze" in the normal sense of the word, rather a convoluted walk around a small central area. People have seen them as a metaphor of a Christian search for salvation or an aid to meditation. Some are composed of a raised grass bank but here on St. Catherine's Hill you walk between the banks on the bare chalk. One legend connected with this maze is that the cutting of it was given as a punishment to a pupil of Winchester College in the 18th C. After completing it, the task had so scrambled his brain that the poor boy threw himself to death off the hill!

Behind the maze, the original entrance to the St Catherine's Hill hillfort is visible as a gap in the ramparts. (Vote or comment on this photo)

I went there last week and it is well signposted but very overgrown. We parked on an old drove road east of the woods and had a lovely ramble, not such a walk as the trail through Breamore woods

Aren't Mizmazes supposed to predate the Medieval period and were possibly used by the people before the Roman invasion as a plan for ritual dances?
