cliffrich visited on 20th Mar 2019 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 3 Good examples of round barrows. Quite large ones which give an imposing presence. The ambience is almost welcoming so a pleasure to walk between them :). Sadly they have been excavated in the past so un-repaired damage on the top is evident

Barrow Cemetery in Isle of Wight

Barrow 'cemetery' in Brighstone Forest. I have split the site into two for convenience, centred around two sets of three barrows to the north and east of the site respectively; there are other barrows scattered around, some of which I have yet to locate. Area 1 has two large round barrows, one with a noticable ditch, and a flat ditched barrow (a pond barrow?). The largest of these is about 3 metres high. These 3 are accessible only by logging tracks (unofficially, and look out for tree felling). Away from the usual thoroughfares, the large round barrows seem to loom out of the trees in timeless isolation.

For more information see the scheduling information for Historic England List ID 1010264 (Round Barow 550m SEE of Gottenleaze Cottages) and Pastscape Monument No. 1358545.
