Baildon Moor (147)
Baildon Moor (147) submitted by stu : SE137401. The Dobrudden stone. Excellent stone cemented against the caravan park wall. (Vote or comment on this photo)
A historically rich landscape, including over 40 cup and ring marked rocks, in West Yorkshire. See our Nearby Sites list below for details of the other sites in the area.

This is the summary page for all submissions relating to Low Plain Baildon Moor. The Yorkshire Post tells us that the top of "Baildon Hill rises to 920 feet high and gives views (in clear weather) to Emley moor Mast and the edge of the Peak District to the south, the Bronte Moors and Forest of Bowland to the west, the long line of Rombalds Moor to the north, and across the Vale of York to the east."

For more information about the moor and it's surrounding areas, visit Bradford Historical and Antiquarian Society's website.

As well as having evidence of Bronze Age settlements and inhabitation, Baildon Moor has over 40 cup and cup and ring carved rocks on Baildon Moor, all within a few hundred meters of each other. For ease of access, and submissions of photographs, these have all been given individual site pages. The carvings can be located at the following grid references:

Very nice to hear about Baildon Moor and its cup-marked stones - it makes a change from all the problems going on over at Ilkley Moor at the moment - where its anything but peaceful !!

'Stone Age star map' ideas from Gordon Holmes by Andy B on Friday, 21 October 2011
(User Info | Send a Message)
[To be taken with a large pinch of (rock) salt - MegP Ed]

‘Stone me! Ilkley's ancient rocks are star maps’

An amateur scientist believes he has finally found proof that ancient rock carvings on Rombalds Moor are “Stone Age star maps”.

Gordon Holmes believes he has uncovered five of the finest examples of primitive maps of the night sky – all carved into stones on the moor.

Mr Holmes, sparked archaeological investigations in 2005 after coming across a possibly unrecognised ancient stone circle (see here http://www.megalithic.co.uk/article.php?sid=7643 - we don't think it is). He has previously documented stone carvings appearing to show the Pole Star, Cassiopeia, Hyades and Pleiades.

A fifth stone he recently has studied on Baildon Moor, however, shed much light on the carvings.

Mr Holmes says he has not uncovered any other star maps elsewhere in the landscape. [That's a relief - MegP Ed]

From the top of the page, has anyone plotted these grid refs for each stone on a single map and do they produce a constellation or any sort of pattern we'd recognise?

Gordon 'Nessie Hunter' Holmes is saying this stone relates in some way to sites on Rombalds Moor to the north. I'd say there are enough cup marked stones up there to trace out any pattern you'd care to make. Add in the ones we don't know about or have been destroyed and it's anyone's guess.

The Rombalds Moor rock art is centered around here http://www.megalithic.co.uk/article.php?sid=7287

This seems to be the same 'amateur scientist' - Gordon T Holmes used to work at Bradford University (but not any more). He has a page here
    http://www.staff.brad.ac.uk/gtholmes/books.htm

He has published various booklets such as Merlin's Meteorite (see link above). Assuming this is the same Gordon T Holmes, he has also had 'A Memorable Encounter at Loch Ness'
    http://www.scottishbooktrust.com/a-memorable-encounter-at-loch-ness-by-gordon-t-holmes
when his 'Nessie footage' shot to worldwide attention. According to Loren Coleman at Cryptomundo, Gordon Holmes has a history of claiming to have filmed 'alien' big cats and fairies:

Cool pic! Is it accessable from outside the caravan park? Or do we have to 'gently tresspass'?! :-)
There are 3 very near this park, with a 4th one in Cliffe castle Museum, Keighley.

Yes....if you park near to the long drive/road up to the caravan park....head up the well worn path to where you can see the caravans and follow the wall along....a 400m walk tops.
