Rock Art in West Yorkshire

The Pancake Stone is a weathered outcrop, perched ominously overlooking the Cow & Calf Hotel. The top is covered in Cup and Ring marks, but is now very worn.

This carved stone also features in The Northern Antiquarian (TNA) - see their page for Pancake Stone, Ilkley Moor, West Yorkshire, which gives directions for finding the site, photographs (including close-ups of the cups and rings), photographs from 1879, sketches and local folklore.

The stone is also recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 49909 and Historic England List ID 1012006. Pastscape simply says this is a "Bronze Age cup marked rock within extant cairnfield .... situated a few hundred yards south of the Cow and Calf." Historic England record Pancake Rock as part of a larger scheduled site, saying: "The monument includes a complex of fragmentary rubble banks forming a series of three or more enclosures, a number of small cairns, and at least eight carved rocks. The rubble banks are typically c.1.5m wide and 0.3m high. Most are not conspicuously orthostatic, but do incorporate occasional large boulders, one of which is carved. The banks forming the largest sub-rectangular enclosure give the impression of being discontinuous by design rather than through robbing. The cairns are small, in the range of 3m-5m in diameter. Only one is conspicuously disturbed. The disturbed cairn has a large central hollow which is probably the result of excavation. The carved rocks have designs in the cup and ring tradition. They include Pancake Rock, a prominent rock with complex carvings consisting mainly of cup marks. Three of the rocks are situated in an area defined by a low scarp which may be a prehistoric quarry. A further carved rock is reported in the area but cannot now be found."

Boughey & Vickerman record this as B&V 332, their description reading: "Huge section of isolated bedrock balanced dramatically on crag edge, its flat upper surface level with the ground to S, very much worn by feet and carved with initials. Earlier records identified fifty-four cups, six complete and five partial rings, grooves."

For more information also see England's Rock Art entry for ERA-2560 Pancake Stone 01, which includes a detailed description, photographs and a plan of the rock and its motifs.

This rock art panel is located on Open Access land.

If you squint, you'll be able to make out a few cup marks on this rock, and also the Whaleback Rock (largest in background). Image captured on 10th Oct 2016, using a drone mounted Go Pro.....hence the dodgy quality. (Vote or comment on this photo)
