Rock Art in Northumberland

This large outcrop is located in Wellhope Forest, near the edge of a forest track. Unfortunately, it is usually covered in needles. The motifs include about 55 cup-marks, some of them with single rings, penannulars and arcs. NADRAP notes that the outcrop has been quarried on its western and eastern edges.

For more information see England's Rock Art entry for ERA-576 Wellhope 1, which includes both NADRAP's and Beckensall's descriptions, photographs, a sketch of the rock and its motifs, plus photogrammetry and media from the Beckensall Archive. NADRAP notes that the SMR/HER record may be incorrectly assigned to this panel.

The original Beckensall record can be found at Internet Archive: Beckensall 490 Wellhope.

It is not recorded if this rock art panel is located on Open Access or private land, but the land use is given as 'wood/forest' so there may be some rights of way through the woodland.

Note: Protected status for seventeen more of Northumbria's rock-art carvings, at Lemmington Wood, Wellhope, Whitsunbank and Goatscrag

Protected status for seventeen more of Northumbria's rock-art carvings by bat400 on Tuesday, 15 April 2014
(User Info | Send a Message)
Sunny100 writes: BBC report: Protected status for 17 more of Northumbria's rock-art carvings. The sites, which can be found in Lemmington Wood, Wellhope, Whitsunbank and Goatscrag, were scheduled as Ancient Monuments thanks to the work of about 100 volunteers from the Northumberland and Durham Rock Art Project (NADRAP), supported by English Heritage.

There are some pretty fantastic photos on here!
