Unlike the henge at Arbor Low, the Bull Ring has no stones around it, although according to early historians, they suggest that it did have stones at one time. However, the site is more pronounced than its counterpart, and just as interesting.

To get there, walk along the A6 northwards, pass the car sales and church on your right. A few steps further, and you'll reach the Cricket green. Turn right along the track, and right again. After passing the buildings on your left, you'll reach the green hummocks that represent the monument. Additional information added by Drew Parsons: In September 2013 it was possible to drive down the lane on the north side of the cricket club and then turn right to park by the Dove Holes Community Centre from where the henge is immediately in front of you.

Moving away from the immediate site, the views from the Henge to the SE towards the Winter Solstice sun rise and southerly moon rises are blocked by spoil tips from mining activities - they look like low hills but are actually spoli heaps.

The summer solstice sunrise (NE) position over Bee Low has been quarried away so it is no longer possible to see what would have been seen - the top of the hill is now gone.

Overall, a lot of damage has been done.

It would be good it the spoil heaps to the SE of the site could be flattened with the trees cleared so that the site could be restored somewhat.

Looking good on 08/04/16. Clean and tidy and somehow glowing. Tis such a special place. Makes me grin every time I see the Bullring Henge official sign on the A6 that appeared shortly after our glorious Henge Event. I think we made a difference. Thanks to all that came especially Andy. A true star.

The Bull Ring is in a tragic state, surrounded by football pitches and fly-tipped rubbish. There is nothing on the site to indicate that it is of prehistoric significance. It seems to be the favourite local dog walking area. A terrible shame considering it was once of equal importance to Arbor Low.

On a recent visit we discovered the edge of a stone poking out of the ditch nearest to the club house on the left. Could this be on of the missing stones or just a left over from quarrying in the area?

Earlier this week the radio station BBC Radio Five Live have been running a poll on Britain's ugliest village.

The lucky winner by a margin was the Derbyshire village of Dove Holes - home of the frequently mutilated Bull Ring circle-henge.

I doubt many of us who have visited the village will dispute the accolade!

More Damage At the Grottiest Village in the Country...

The BULL RING, the sad remains of a once-great monument, is again being threatened by some of the inhabitants of the ugliest village in Britain.

On a visit today (April 1st 2002) I was shocked - but not surprised - to see a wrecked tractor, a semi-demolished and burnt-out building and the rubble associated with imminent buiding work on the edge of the monument. That was bad enough, but the damage extended actually onto the monument, where tracks and tyres have churned up the bank just beside the entrance and rubble/rubbish from the heap has been dumped on the bank to rot alongside the dog faeces and rubbish commonly abandoned by the local louts.

There is another pile of dumped rubble/rubbish on the other side of the henge.

Who is in charge of this site? Who has given permission for further building work on its edges? And who is in charge of policing the monument to prevent damage to this unique and increasingly degraded site?

Not knowing this particular site or location I cannot add much to the discussion but one or two thoughts do come to mind.

Is this a scheduled monument? If it is, it is protected by law and a report should be sent to English Heritage (not that they really care).

If it is not a scheduled monument a campaign of letter writing to the local and national media to generate some interest might be appropriate. Hell, why not contact Time Team. Nice little mystery here a henge with missing stones.

Anyway just a thought.

"The changing rooms/village hall next to the Bull Ring have been vandalised and burnt down. We are in close contact with the Dove Holes Community Association (as the owners) and are aware that the site is a mess, although fortunately we don't think that any significant damage has been caused to the archaeological remains themselves. We were told by the DHCA that the rutting of the surfaces and banks was caused by the vandals.

For some years the Bull Ring has been a problem, and we are engaged in a campaign to improve its condition - largely by getting the local community to respect and value the site. As well as the DHCA, I think we need to persuade High Peak Borough Council that they should take a closer interest in the condition of the henge and its setting. Most recently we have carried out geophysical survey of the monument (although this failed to yield any new information), and there is an intention to provide an interpretation panel as soon as we can get a

Hi! I've been reading all of the comments regarding the protection of the Bull Ring monument with great interest. I am currently studying my MA in European Prehistory and as part of one of my pieces of work wanted to draft a proposal for future protection and making the henge more accessible to the public etc. I would like to ask is the henge still unprotected/not a proper visitor site (like Arbor Low) or have you been successful in your quest to have it recognised as it should be?

We had a very successful open day at the Bull Ring on Saturday. Thanks to everyone who attended and helped, it was great to see you all. More about the day soon, I have some videos to edit and upload.

We made some good contacts with the Community Association and the people who live there. With two sporting events sharing the same car park it got a bit busy at times but we are taking up the car parking problems with the relevant people locally and hopefully it can be a bit better organised in future.

    I have been sky watching and studying aliignments and other things at the henge and local area for atleast 10 years.

    Odd idea but how about getting in touch with the local Morris dance teams. In my experience (I used to Morris dance in Kent), members are usually interested in ancient sites, some sides even dance at them. I've found two in the local area there might be more:

      I'll contact every Morris team in Derbyshire (and maybe further afield). As a certified (or is that sectioned) green man I can directly relate to Morris dancers.
      They would fit very well with some BIG news that we are hoping to be able to announce very soon . . .
      Everything is fitting together nicely.

Today I have contacted Derby Museum, The British Museum, The Festival of British Archaeology and Heritage Action. Tomorrow I shall set about the local and national media (some good contacts).
Getting support from all over the world and some seriously good ideas from ShropshireTraveller today (what a nice man).
Everyday it's protection is getting closer.

    many thanks for your message of support. I am starting to get them from all over the world !! Most of my email attempts have replied with directions to contact English Heritage - which I have done of course. I know Jon Humble (ancient monuments inspector) a bit and I have friends that know him quite well. Every reply has been really positive and I am delighted. Email me at [email protected] if you have any further thoughts or fancy a meet up at this mighty henge. I will be there on Friday at about 5.30ish for a quick respite from the A6.

          I was at the henge from 4.30pm until 5.50pm,had a
          good wander round.It became totally dark,and the swirling wind in the center of the henge almost made me take off.

          I have visited the Bullring Henge on most seasonal dates for ten years now,usually no one has been there at sunrise and sunset or moontimes except me.
          (sometimes my friends have joined in.)
          I know it very well.
          It is the most special precious place in the world to me,,,
          SO...LET US SAVE THE BULLRING HENGE.

            Rats - missed you by 10 mins !! A6 pretty busy. I was there at 6pm for about 25 mins. Very very windy but still sensational. Sounds like you love it more than me!!
            Your most precious place in the world - superb. I can see why. I feel it long before I arrive.
            I will be there again a week on Fri (18th) at about 6pm. Let's try to meet and discuss our plans. Still buzzing from Time Team last night - that was just brilliant. Let's hope they decide to dig the Bullring and publicise our campaign.

              The Bullring Henge is always worth visiting.
              Friday evenings windy darkness with racing clouds was dramatic.
              Made me think about people of the distant past that created the henge,surviving through the cold winters.

Hello fellow henge-heads.

Today I have sent heart-felt emails to the following:
English Heritage (Jon Humble)
Peak Park Authority (although not in Peak Park but worth a try)
High Peak Borough Council
Derbyshire County Council
Derbyshire County Archaeologist (Dave Barrett)

Starting to get some seriously positive responses - it seems many people care passionately about this mighty henge. I have several locals completely on side and support from all over the world. What can you do to help me?

I have now read all 3 articles relating to the Bullring in the Derbyshire Archaeological Journal (1905, 1915 and 1988) - superbly interesting - recommended to all. It is so similar to Arbor Low in almost every way it is uncanny.

I shall be visiting the henge again on Friday evening. Can't wait.

Visited again on Friday. My 3rd visit and it still excites me long before I get there! Starting to get some positive responses. Contacted everyone I know at museums and they are also starting to get interested.
Megalithic site stats are telling me 15,000 people have read this page in the last month (minus the 200 by me of course) - that is great news. Currently busy devouring the Derbyshire Archaeological Journal entries for the digs at the Bullring.

We're all cheering you on from the sidelines, Blingo and waiting to hear how you are getting on. Don't forget, out of the tens of thousands of members that we have, only a tiny percentage actually post messages on the site pages or fora. But, importantly, they do read what's going on.

Well - just tried to get some interest from the Derbyshire Archaeological Journal but met with a very flat response. Very poor but will keep trying.
Getting slightly disappointed with the lack of response on here too.
Come on folks - help me out. Does nobody else care? I really can't believe you don't. Even a simple message of support would be great.

I need some positivity to fire me up.

PS If you are looking for back issues of the Derbyshire Archaeological Journal then try Amazon and Ebay before ordering direct from them. I got 1998-2009 issues on Ebay last night for £23 (cost of back order £186 !!!!!). 1988 ordered from Amazon for £8 delivered (£11 back issue delivered).

A mighty Ur temple - ignored and damaged by Anonymous on Wednesday, 19 January 2011
The Bull Ring is sensational. I visited it for the first time 2 weeks ago in the dark and was blown away with it's atmosphere (even so close to houses, A6 etc). I have visited hundreds of ancient sites in Derbyshire and have always avoided the Bull Ring because of what I have read about it's state of preservation (I really thought it would upset me) - how wrong I was. This henge needs love from all us meganaughts (trademark pending on that new word). I'm going to call in again tomorrow afternoon and I am sure it will amaze me once again. I am excited just to think about it. I always take neolithic stone axes (obsessive collector) with me to ancient sites and this one made them tingle. More than most. The 6500yo serpentine point butted axes I sat in the middle may have been the first stone axes to visit this site since it was part of the Langdale axe trail . . .

Let's stand up for our Derbyshire heritage and try to get something done about this mighty henge. Post back if you fancy starting a war. I'm armed (with stone axes) and fully up for it. I know of others that will join us. The mission starts here.

    Visited again on Thursday and once again - a sensational henge. Something needs to change as I can no longer accept the gradual destruction of this sacred space. It has survived something like 4500 years so far. It could be gone in the next 50. I have started talking to locals and I have been met with a generally positive attitude so far. There seem to be many inhabitants of Dove Holes that would be happy to see the henge as a more prominent feature of their village and a potentially lucrative tourist attraction. Next step is to contact every possible authority and state my case. This is going to be a long fight but I will devote plenty of time to it.

    Please help by contacting anyone that may be able to help/advise - councils, authorities, media, legal help, English Heritage etc.

    Collectively we surely owe our ancestors more respect than this.
    Anybody fancy a mega-meet at the henge soon?
    A sudden increase in visitor numbers will start to get it noticed again. Let's get Dove Holes talking about it. Why not call in every time you go along the A6? I shall be visiting at least every fortnight from now onwards.

The Bull Ring Henge is a special place of ancient peace and has alot to teach people.I love it ----it should be looked after and treasured---not forgotten and treated like a tip..................Spica.
