Rock Art in Yorkshire (North)
"Rediscovered by Stuart Feather (1964) in one of his ambles in the area — and he would have been pretty pleased when he found this one! It is the most complex and ornate of all the prehistoric carvings in and around this large open field. With at least nine cup-and-rings and more than fifty other cups etched onto its rounded upper surface, there are various other lines and grooves linking up some elements of this mythic design. The best ones are on the upright and sloping east-face of the rock, into the rising sun". The Northern Antiquarian (TNA) feature a page on this cup-and-ring marked stone - see their page for Burhill Kiln Allotment (415), Appletreewick, North Yorkshire. This stone is also referred to as Boughey & Vickerman Carving No. 415. The TNA page gives precise directions on how to reach this stone, at NGR SE0779261829, together with a photograph and Boughey and Vickerman's plan of the carving.
Pastscape Monument No. 48480 gives details of "a group of five cup marked millstone grit boulders ..... were indicated on the ground by Mr. S. Feather in the area centred at SE07766175." This central grid reference is just under 150 metres to the north east of this particular stone.
Historic England List Entry 1014965 gives specific details of a 'rock with a complex pattern of cup, ring and groove marks, 755m NNE of Ridge Lathe, Burhill Kiln Allotment, Skyreholme' at NGR SE0778761834 (virtually identical to TNA's), saying: "the monument includes a carved gritstone rock, 2.5m x 2.2m x 0.7m. It is situated at Skyreholme, 50m south east of the limekiln on Burhill Kiln Allotment. The carving consists of a complex pattern of many cups, rings and grooves."
