Standing Stone (Menhir) in Yorkshire (West)

Details of this curious standing stone can be found on The Northern Antiquarian (TNA) - see their entry for Churn Milk Joan, Midgley Moor, West Yorkshire. TNA tells us: "The present large standing stone you see before you isn’t prehistoric.  However, the small broken piece on the ground by its side may have been its prehistoric predecessor; and there is certainly something of an archaic nature here — albeit a contentious one — as we find old cup-markings cut into its eastern face." The stone is sited near the boundary stone of Churn Milk Joan.

TNA include photographs of the stone and the cup marks on it's eastern face. They also give directions on how to find the stone, together with a brief archaeology and history and some local folklore.

I see TMA has the wrong grid ref for this stone. I've updated our page.

Churn Milk Joan is well described in Paul Bennett’s book The Old Stones of Elmet. It is not prehistoric but an old boundary stone. It may have been used earlier if the few apparent cupmarks are prehistoric. It stands some 7ft high, is almost square in section and tapers to the top. Various legends, ancient and modern, attach to it. Its surprising feature is the Ordnance Survey Benchmark cut into its eastern face.
Ted Hughes wrote a lovely poem about her which starts:

A lonely stone
Afloat in the stone heavings of emptiness
Keeps telling her tale.
