Foxlowe Edge
Foxlowe Edge submitted by PaulM : A decent but leaning standing stone with easy access (on a footpath). Located at SK00387590 overlooking the Goyt Valley on the Derbyshire/Cheshire border but in the Derbyshire area of the Peak National Park. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Standing Stone in Derbyshire

This single standing stone is situated on a public footpath overlooking the Goyt Valley and is actually located just over the border into Derbyshire. As with many standing stones in this part of the world the view is fantastic. To the east the vista opens up over the two Goyt Valley reservoirs and further on into the Peak National Park.

The stone itself is a slim pillar, leaning heavily to the north-west. Erosion at its base, perhaps caused by sheltering sheep, has created a water filled pool (although this has been suggested to be a spring) which reflects the stone’s elegant profile in the right conditions.

The reason for its existence could well be its prominent positioning next to the track you have taken to find it. As mentioned some standing stones seem to act as markers along the lines of important routes. There is little direct evidence for that here, but undoubtedly the Goyt Valley was an important and resource-rich area in the past.

Access

The standing stone on Foxlow Edge stands close to the ruins of Errwood Hall. Parking is available for several cars in a lay-by on a lane known locally as ‘The Street’ at NGR: SK002762. From here the stone is visible to the south-east but to reach it you need to take the path that leaves the lay-by. After 200m when the path forks, follow the left route up to Foxlow Edge and you will come to the stone after 300m or so to the left of the path.

Foxlowe Edge submitted by TimPrevett : Can you see an almost humanoid fish face in this stone? Frowning face, great big crest, and drooping ears... or have I been watching too much Dr Who? (1 comment - Vote or comment on this photo)

[Okay, thanks, now up-dated Admin] The lat/long are a bit out on this.
I think that 53.280131, -1.995659 and a grid ref of SK 00386 75907 is a bit closer.
Thanks,
David
