drolaf visited on 13th Aug 2024 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 5 Access: 4 forestry has been felled and replanted (native species i think) so its all more open. a very similar site to Tomnaverie: on a hill with some long distance views to south and west. some impressively large stones. another banked kerbed circle. the kerb is a mixture of pink granite and white stones. must have looked striking when first built.

freedomandpeace visited on 30th Apr 2013 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 4 I parked in the one space right where the farm track bends, then walked up the path until I saw the path through the woods to the stone circle. Walking through the woods was a little spooky as you could hear the trees creaking and it was a little dark in there. The stone circle is located at the edge of the woods in a clearing. This stone circle had a different feel than others I visited in Aberdeenshire. This circle had a more abandoned feel to me, and I felt a feeling of sadness and abandonment when I first arrived at the circle. I feel that this circle wants to be used more and visited more. I loved this circle and look forward to returning.

"Aikey Brae Rrecumbent Stone Circle is at the edge of a wood" - not any more! The tiny patch of woodland which provided a charming setting has been felled.

Nearest villages are Old Deer and Stuartfield. Approx 1 hour walk from The Square in Stuartfield heading out of the village up Windhill Street. Beautiful walk but watch out for the farm dog as you leave the road onto a field perimeter path near the end of your walk. He is a brute and loves barking suddenly at passersby. I have been assured he's all bark but keep your wits about you.

As a child I used to go to Aikey Brae every year with my family in the summer.There was a horse fair and a fun-fair on the site.
The worship of the horse in Pictish society,the stonecircle,the celebration of horse fair,the family gatherings in summer to enjoy Aikey Brae fair,and now pagans claiming back their religious heritage are links to our ancestors at the site

tranquil and beautiful as always.i was here in 03 harvest time,picked up a corn dolly wondering what it was. was told a fertility symbol,and quickly threw it away, within a couple of months i was expecting my fourth child,very unexpectedly, at the age of 39.mystical cool and true.

The circle's far more open now than it was now that the SE to SW of the circle is treeless. However when I was there last on the 18th of June07, the path through the trees was really grown up. I knew where to go it's just the coniferous trees were a sod to negotiate.
When I visited this site years ago it was insulated by youngish conifers , I think in a way this was better, more intimate.

This wonderfully sited circle is on top of Parkhouse Hill which would give a 360degree panoramic view (were it not for the trees to one side).It is easily reached off the road from Old Deer to Maud. Turn left up the minor road to Scroghill and park in the track entrance at the third bend. Follow the track up between the fields and then turn right on the path through the field into the wood.

    I visited Aikey Brae this past summer, and I'm wondering by the directions given what you mean by the road to Scroghill. Are you referring to a geographical site (sucha s an actual hill), a sign. or a farm? I am aware of a farm that is called Scroghill, but you'd have to either walk cross country to Aikey Brae or backtrack up the road from it

    Also, does anyone know how far the Scroghill farm is from the track that leads to Aikey Brae and also how far it is west from Stuartfield.

    I'd love to see a map with the details that include Aikey Brae and Scroghill farm as this is where my great-grandmother was born.
