FeelingPeachy visited on 17th Sep 2010 - their rating: Cond: 5 Amb: 5 Access: 4 A short walk across the fields from the village of Holystone (is well signposted, so you can't get lost). The field is also quite special, with a peaceful ambience. We visited late in the afternoon, and it was very quiet. This is beautiful, tranquil place. The water in the well is crystal clear, with the water continuously running. The trees surrounding the well seem to have been specially chosen to reinforce the sacredness of this site: Yew, Beech, Holly. I am studying/visiting places with a connection to the Divine Feminine, and this, The Lady's Well, felt very special to me..would like to find out more! Highly recommended if you want a place to be still, to meditate and 'switch off' for an hour. A place to find inner-peace and solitude.

Lady's Well (Holystone)
Lady's Well (Holystone) submitted by KiwiBetsy : The site was restored in the 19th century and is now cared for by the National Trust. Another sign on the side of a building in the tiny village of Holystone, points the way to the well across the fields but if, like us, you miss this you will end up driving past St Mungo’s Well and parking in the Forestry Commission carpark. A path leads through the forest for a way before turning right to cr... (Vote or comment on this photo)

Lady's Well (Holystone)
Lady's Well (Holystone) submitted by KiwiBetsy : During the first half of the 12th century a Priory was built at Holystone as a home for some Augustinian Canonesses. Since then the well has been known as Lady's Well after these religious ladies who cared for the well right up to the Dissolution of the Monasteries. They are said to have added the cross that reflects so splendidly in the water. (1 comment - Vote or comment on this photo)

The well was originally called St Ninian’s Well after a 5th century apostle. associated with a number of wells beside Roman roads in Northumbria. The name was changed to St Paulinus’s Well after Paulinus, who later became Bishop of York, baptised 2000 conve... (Vote or comment on this photo)

Just got back from a twilight visit with Friends. Signage difficult to read. Pathway up was a quagmire in places. Dog mess in places. Site itself was magical. Very still and silent. Beautiful reflections of a sunset sky reflected in mirror glass water of pool. Tall trees stood sentry around the site lending a sense of calm and tranquillity.

It was most interesting to visit this site on 13 September 2012.

Quite well conserved but definately not enough legible information about the Saints associated with the place and associated history. The carved inscription on the Celtic Cross base was covered with lichens and illegible especially to the partially sighted.

A booklet in the nearby church would be a good idea. Thank you

If you look on the church signboard, that should give you a contact number, you could enquire whether they are in the process of producing any booklets with the history of the Well, or you could suggest they may like to do so.
Considering the name of the village is Holystone, it's likely the Well was much more ancient and was incorporated, whereas the fate of the stone after which the village is named appears to be a mystery - at least inasmuch as it's not shown on our list of nearby sites! Perhaps it's within the church's curtilage and has been carved into a cross or it could be in the actual building.
There's a local archaeology group who may have further info at http://www.holystonehag.co.uk/

Just visited this site again today, grew up near here as a child, it has a lovely peaceful ambience with a natural identity and presence.... The heritage and the visible spring use for the village was brilliant to see, and the water from the brook tasted better than Evian..... the public footpaths surrounding the well were brilliant to view the roman road and get a sense of how the holy well evolved ........ long may it continue to be accessible to the layman :)

Visited on 17th September, 2010. A peaceful place to visit and spend an hour in meditation, or silent contemplation. The trees surrounding the Well are also very beautiful: Yew, Beech and Holly to name but a few.

I visited this site in July 2003. My mother's family lived in Holystone and her older sister would often escort visitors across the field to the Lady's Well, circa 1916.
It is a beautiful, peaceful and spiritual spot.
