TheCaptain visited on 31st May 2021 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 4 Walking a Cooper's Hill Circuit of the Cotswold Way from Cranham, and on the way back to Cranham I made a diversion into the woods to find this long barrow. It’s a massive lump, now mostly cleared of trees, and built in an east to west sense, significantly bigger at the eastern end, which was no doubt the main entrance.

drolaf visited on 27th Jan 2017 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 3 Access: 4 access can be from road, park near old timber yard.

Dabberdave visited on 15th Jan 2017 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 4 Looks like some tree clearance work has been done on the mound quite recently. It was quite easy to find, about a 10 minute walk from a rough parking place on the B4070.

4clydesdale7 visited on 23rd Jun 2011 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 3 Not that hard to find - just keep walking up hill from the sawmills (along a pathway that starts -left- between the gate to the sawmills and the gate by the old cricket pavilion and then take the second oblique right keeping the higher part of the hill/wood just slightly to the left of your direction of travel) - just short of the top is West Tump - worth the effort

West Tump
West Tump submitted by Dabberdave : West Tump long barrow after recent tree clearance. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Long Barrow with Trapezoidal Mound in Gloucestershire. The barrow is about 60 metres long, and faces east. It lies in quiet mixed and beech woodland, so is in good condition and is not hard to find, up the hill but not on the crest.

There is also what might be a ww2 bunker nearby. Trees on the barrow have been felled and brushwood marks the barrow borders, and acts as a barrier to off road bicycles. The barrow's future seems secure.

Hamish writes: This is the very devil to find but here we go. Follow Buckle road to the saw mills and park there. Walk back up the road for about 100mtrs look for a mountain bike track on the right. Follow this track, cross a horsey path and follow track 'till you reach a wide horsey path. Follow this path up the hill ,when you reach the top cut to the right across the woods - no path here - you will see the Barrow through the trees.

West tump is now covered in short scrub and seems ok. The surrounding brushwood has kept cyclists off it very effectively. It is only 500m from a popular (but nice) campsite but is rarely visited-most people keep to the main paths. Many of the long barrows around here are ploughed down in fields, so it’s nice to find one still more intact.

If I remember correctly there is a small round barrow to the west of this , some 100 yrds or so. There is a good report on the excavation in O G S Crawford's ' Long barrows of the cotswolds' together with some excellent photos wich show a false entrance in such a good a condition as Belas Knap is now! Shame it wasnt cared for and I also noticed last time I was there, that the damage caused by mountain bikes has increased markedly. Crawford's book is available at the Cheltenham public library in the reference section.
