Peter Knight in "The Ancient Stones of Dorset" cites a local as saying "it's been there as long as I can remember" (p78). The National Monuments record does not list it, but there are plenty of barrows in the area, as well as the Woodbury Hill Camp hillfort. Some sarsen stones have been used in barrows, and then moved as the barrow has deteriorated.

So - nothing conclusively helpful.

I actually grew up in East Burton, Wool - but have not been back to Wool for many years. If I recall correct, is the school on the LH side of the road, as the road goes up the hill? Trying to place it in my mind.

    The road name is miss leading. It is not the school at Wool. This stone is outside Bere Regis First School on Rye Hill BH20 7LP. It is not the Wool Road but Rye hill on the road that goes to Wool. Furthermore the school has only been there for last 70 years or so which also gives doubts to this being the stone's original setting. This is a link

Is this the original setting for this stone? I'm governor at the school and we were thinking of making a feature of it. A placard telling people what it is. A small fence to stop the kids climbing on it.
But some doubt about it's origins as the older locals said a builder came along one day and deposited it there.

Any thoughts.
