Shingle Bell
Shingle Bell submitted by KiwiBetsy : The well is a small spring which issues from near the base of a tree and seeps away down a slope. The waters of Shingle Bell used to be considered good for curing eye problems and those who were cured used to hang rags from nearby trees. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Wiltshire

Our instructions to find Shingle Bell were: “Park in the Rose and Crown carpark on the A36, and take the public footpath through the kissing gate just across the road from the carpark. After about 100 yards we passed an abandoned railway truck on the right, shortly after there is a small clearing. Take the small path leading to the right off the clearing. A little way down the path is a seat on the left. Shingle Bell lies just down the slope from the seat”
However without the help of a local landowner we would never have found it (and it may in fact be on private land). The whole area is wet and well covered in wild garlic.
