Big Tree Long Barrow
Big Tree Long Barrow submitted by hamish : I didn't venture into the field as it had just been ploughed. I cannot find any information about this barrow other than it is here. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Long Barrow in Somerset

This is a ploughed out long barrow, just to the north of the A362 road on Buckland Down. The "Big Tree" referred to in its modern name was an elm which stood on the site until the 1960s.

More detailed information is available from the site page on the Somerset Historic Environment Record, which describes it as a "chambered long barrow". Any large stones have long since disappeared; some were supposed to have been broken up and used when the nearby road was metalled.

On Environment Agency lidar (grey icon next to CamRA) just to the north of the posted location is a scruffy looking mound that may or may not be a long-barrow. More interesting is some kind of large enclosure about 300 m to the SW
