Hillfort in Gloucestershire

From Pastscape:

"Iron Age hillfort visible as an earthwork comprising a sub-rectangular multivallate enclosure. There are no apparent traces of interior habitation. Quarrying has caused mutilation within the monument but other than this it is well-preserved. Scheduled. The earthwork remains (visible through the trees) of this hillfort were mapped from aerial photographs."

This Camp is quite a puzzle - the defended area is approx 150m by 100m - rather small but the earthworks are remarkably large and they do not always follow the contours - no trace has ever been found of it having been occupied - it takes time to work out how the defences combine to make a formidable stronghold - but its design is really quite cunning - it cannot be approached from the NW,N, NE or E because of precipitous slopes - the W approach is only marginally better but it has been fortified with three enormous banks and two deep ditches and from the S (i.e. along the footpath you take to climb there - supposedly the easy route) three more large banks and ditches - but that is not all - on the approach from the S for about 250m there is a high bank to your E 'pushing you westward' into the high banks and deep ditches - the cairn probably had two roles - strengthening the defences near the entrance and an observation platform overlooking the E end of the S defences - well worth a visit
