Stantonbury Camp was at one time known as Marksbury and earlier, in the Saxon Charters, it is referred to as Merces Burgh - thus the Iron Age univallate hillfort gains its name in much the same way as Maes Knoll -

It has recently been added to the English Heritage 'At Risk' register - the Scheduled Ancient Monument is perhaps most famous for the fact that it is situate on the Wansdyke (as is Maes Knoll) - the 3 acre camp sits on a 70m flat hilltop and is protected in the main by substantial steep scarps - there was a protective bank around the camp but little of this remains today - today it is the base for a Shoot - there are game feeding/holding crops pens feeders shelters and pheasants in abundance - a word of advice, it is best not to try to visit in the shooting season -

It is mentioned in:-
(a) The Victorian County History of Somerset 1911 Vol 2 p500
(b) The Archaeological Journal 1958 Vol 115 p32
(c) Ancient Earthworks & Camps of Somerset by E Burrow 1924 p92/3
(d) The County Archaeologies Series publ by Methuen 1931 author DP Dobson p201 AND
(e) pastscape: Bath & North East Somerset: Marksbury: 201138

The Wansdyke is not usually (in Somerset) quite as prominent as when it passes through this site - thus a visit for this ditch alone is worth the stiff climb - best undertaken from the East along the Dyke itself
