Cairn in Cumbria

Site of Little Kinmond Bronze Age Cairn officially recorded and previously excavated by W. Greenwell and listed as Pastscape Monument No. 13167.

Round cairn 630m ENE of Sunbiggin Farm. A partly turf-covered mound of limestone rubble 17.5m in diameter and up to 2m high. At the cairn's centre is an irregular hollow 0.5m deep containing the remains of a stone cist investigated during the 19th century. The remains of three burials were found either in the cist or in close proximity to it, together with a stone artefact, bones of ox and goat and a portion of deer antler; scheduled.

Part of the stone cist is clearly visible today, albeit partly moss covered!

The cairn commands a wide aspect to the south overlooking Sunbiggin/Ravenstondale and to the northern Howgill Fells.

Little Kinmond Cairn
Little Kinmond Cairn submitted by SumDoood : Looking ESE-ish. The cairn is rather larger than many in the area, but it is helped by an upturn in the underlying limestone strata on the downhill side. (Vote or comment on this photo)
