Slaggyford cup-marked stone
Slaggyford cup-marked stone submitted by David : (Vote or comment on this photo)
There are two standing stones; one large, one small and a few quarried big rocks that are covered in eroded cupmarks on one face only. There is a shelf where the bedrock breaks through the turf and this stone is very soft sandstone with coarse veins of quartz running through.

A block of freshly quarried stone has been abandoned there – it has no cupmarks – and the large standing stone – which has the map reference – is a crumbling piece of this special material. One face of the standing stone is covered in many cupmarks, while the smaller one, which is hard sandstone, has just a couple. The big stone points exactly north toward Proudy Hill, which ia significant drumlin on the horizon,

These stones have never been visited by an archaeologist or enthusiast apart from myself. The stones are on Right To Roam land but permission is needed from the farmhouse to cross the field before them. There's a gateway down the lefthand side of the barn that faces you as you reash the farm. Alternately access might be from the Warded Way, above, where there's Right To Roam access all the way.

Slaggyford Stones
Slaggyford Stones submitted by David : This is flat horizontal stone off toward the bield, on the same plot of land. This looks very much like a boulder burial and I once approached a notable archaeologist, at a conference, and said something like ' I think I've found a boulder burial'. Needless he couldn't get away quickly enough. Perhaps these marks are better known as micro-cups. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Slaggyford Stones
Slaggyford Stones submitted by David : Another of these chunks of unusual soft sandstone. This one has the top face covered in cupmarks. I'm not sure that there are any other similar groups of stones known. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Slaggyford Stones
Slaggyford Stones submitted by David : An earthfgast boulder nearby. The grain of the quartz veins may faintly be made out and that same face is covered in many now-eroded cupmarks. There are four or five similar boulders about and they've never even been counted, much less properly photographed. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Slaggyford Stones
Slaggyford Stones submitted by David : Here's what a couple of years does to the patina of an excavated cupmarked stone. I did phone Stan Beckensall to tell him of these strange cupmarked stones and he told me to read all his books and then call him back. (He's still not seen them). (Vote or comment on this photo)

Slaggyford Stones
Slaggyford Stones submitted by David : Being buried for a few hundred years has clearly preserved the cupmarks but they will erode quickly once they are open to sheep's feet and farm bike tyres. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Slaggyford Stones
Slaggyford Stones submitted by David : Here's another cupmarked stone with the quartz veins displayed. It was under the turf for many years and has bleached white. This is the first photo after excavation and the bedding planes of the sandstone go downward, ito the ground. It was clearly purposely left here and looks toward Proudy Hill, on the horizon.

Slaggyford Stones
Slaggyford Stones submitted by David : Another view of the small standing stone. There is a track along the hillside. out toward the fells, and this stone is beside it.

Slaggyford Stones
Slaggyford Stones submitted by David : This is the small standing stone in this collection of stones. It has two cupmarks only.

Slaggyford Stones
Slaggyford Stones submitted by David : A closer view of the cupmarked face of the large standing stone. The straight patterned lines on the stone are veins of white quartz grains.

Slaggyford Stones
Slaggyford Stones submitted by David : The large standing stone. It is clearly in poor condition. The cupmarked face is visible as well as some of the grain of the rock.
