Raisbeck Wood
Raisbeck Wood submitted by SumDoood : Taken from downslope, i.e. the south, inside what seems to be an excavated area which I suggest might have provided much of the stone material for building the cairn. But why, when it would then need to be carried uphill? Notice the "shoulders" around the main mound which are comprised, I assume, mainly of stone which has slumped down and outward during excavation(s). (Vote or comment on this photo)
Round Cairn in Cumbria

Pastscape Monument no. 13162. No name given, so I've taken one from the nearest named feature, the woodland downslope. I can add little to the Pastscape information, but it's a grand location with huge views, except to the north. Sunbiggin Tarn and many other ancient sites can all be watched over by the cairn's occupants. Visited by me 040320.

The cairn is also scheduled as Historic England List Entry No. 1011150 (Round cairn 450m south-east of Castle Folds).

Raisbeck Wood
Raisbeck Wood submitted by SumDoood : The cairn and the pool nearby. 675 metres to the W at 54.473789, -2.547726 are 3 similar pools close to two vaguely circular adjoining / overlapping enclosures, perhaps Neolithic in origin (with a presumed later rectangular addition inset). It occurred to me that these pools might all have been dug (and lined with clay?), so as to provide water for farmed animals grazing nearby on limestone ... (Vote or comment on this photo)

Raisbeck Wood
Raisbeck Wood submitted by SumDoood : To the south across the Lune valley are The Howgills in the background. Was there once a ditch around this cairn? (Vote or comment on this photo)
