Noon Hill Bronze Age Burial Cairn, Rivington by Andy B on Sunday, 11 September 2022
(User Info | Send a Message)
On the edge of the summit of Noon Hill stands a Bronze Age burial cairn. Measuring some twenty-one metres in diameter, it is bounded by a stone kerb which encircles a mound. A cremated burial sat at the heart of the structure, and wooden posts were driven into the monument, encircling its stony core.

    Hello Sean,
Thanks very much for sending these in, I have put this site on our front page.
Could you send in some photos of the recent damage. Is the damage to the main cairn or the walkers' cairn on top?

Was up there today. Cairn had been badly vandalised and the stock fence along the side of the access track had been vandalised in many places ie wire fencing had been cut making the grazing land open to trespass and dogs. The monument itself seems to have been untouched by last years big moorland fires amazingly.... it seems to have stopped..or been stopped only yards away from the burial mound. The rest of the moor where the fires were is now covered in cotton grass giving a spectacular view towards Rivington Pike and Winter Hill.....miles and miles of it. 28/5/19

I too also have been visiting the area for years. I'm up there most weekends, just to get away for a few hours. What causes me most pain, is the fact that the Noon Hill cairn is vandalised on a regular basis. I have rebuilt it personally several times, only to return and find all the stones scattered about. I even witnessed some chap kick it all down, but I was some distance away, therfore unable to make my anger known. As of 19/03/2019 the cairn is in a sorry state, I shall return shortly...
