An extremely wet trek across the bog today in mid-February 2016, but the tumulus remains an awesome reward for the journey. Despite the fact I had to remove an empty bottle of someone else's port from the summit, loneliness and isolation remains the key to this burial mound's amazing power. I would camp one night upon the summit if I didn't have such reverence for the place.

The midsummer sunrise, as seen from Round Loaf, appears at 5 (or was it 5.30)am over the summit of Great Hill. I witnessed this in 1989. A friend was at Castlerigg stone circle on the same morning and the sun appeared at the same time at both sites. On returning towards Lead Mine Valley, because of the lay of the land, the sun kept disappearing from sight and then reappearing, so we saw several "sunrises". RF.

I have been told this site has been 'downgraded' since someone wrote a thesis declaring it to be a Glacial Deposit. I have a limited Geological and Archaeological knowledge - but to me it looks man made. If the thesis states Geological origin - and even if that were true, I think Bronze Age man has 'built on' to this deposit to exaggerate it - as they often did. It dominates the landscape and can be seen continuously from all heights as you travel on nearby hills. It does not fit into the look of the land - the geography of the area. It also looks very similar to recorded sites I have visited in Hawkshaw not far away. In fact I think all these sights are linked and the main ones can be seen from each other.........but more to come of that in time.

Condition: Good condition, certainly noticable on the oper moorland.

Ambience: Exposed to the elements, but a feeling of solitude and remoteness definately exists compared to the surrounding pikes and hill tops in the area. No livestock or evidence or agriculture present. You get the feeling not many people venture to this interesting site compared to the popularity of surrounding walks, but it is worth it for the excellent views across west Lancashire, Cheshire and North Wales.

Access: Use the OS Explorer 1:25,000 scale maps as the 50,000 scale do not highlight Devil's Ditch which my dog almost fell down. This is a narrow crevasse around 6 or more feet in depth that is covered by the heather etc. Not advisable to go to after moderate or heavy rain as the ground is like a sponge and extremely boggy. There is no designated or clear footpath to the Round Loaf and the crossing of streams, very sucepatable to dangerous flooding after rain may well be necessary.
