Anne T visited on 27th Oct 2018 - their rating: Cond: 4 Amb: 4 Access: 5 Rood Well, Stenton: A very pretty well, and very easy to find. Just by the side of the road, some 300 metres north east along the B6370 from The Tron. The well is below pavement level, with steps leading down to it. The well cavity was damp but there was no pool of water. I couldn’t see any pipe leading into the well chamber, so assume the water must seep up into the cavity. Being closely surrounded by a stone wall on three sides, with a ploughed field beyond, it was a little tricky to photograph. As the Canmore entry from the Old Church (ID 57841) says, the finial on the well is thought to come from the Old Church (14th century). There is a small plaque on the side of the well which reads: “16th century historic building”.

Rood Well
Rood Well submitted by KiwiBetsy : The Rood Well, also known as The Well of the Holy Rood or the 'Cardinal’s Hat', sits beside the B6370. It is located in a small garden area on the northeastern edge of Stenton, on the left if you are heading for Dunbar. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Holy Well / Spring in East Lothian

For more information on this 16th century well see Canmore ID 57840. They record an entry from 1883 which reads: "The Well of the Holy Rood, which has long been filled up, is enclosed by a small circular building, 3ft 10 ins internal diameter, with a doorway, and a conical stone roof, topped by a probably 14th c. flowered finial which is said to have come from (Stenton Parish Church), to which a paved path leads from the well."

In 1966, an update was added which said that although partially filled in, water could still be seen. "The path to the church no longer exists."

Rood Well
Rood Well submitted by Anne T : Poking the camera lens over the iron railings into the chamber, the chamber is damp but no sign of a pool of water. I couldn't see any sign of a pipe into the well (unless it's under the mud?) so presumably the water rises directly into the chamber? (Vote or comment on this photo)

Rood Well
Rood Well submitted by Anne T : The gated and padlocked well chamber. A small sign on the side of well, just to the right of the gate (as you face the road), reads: "16th century historic building". (Vote or comment on this photo)

Rood Well
Rood Well submitted by Anne T : A close up of the finial of the well, which is said to have come from the 14th century old church about 170m to the south west of the well. We had a look for the old path linking the church to the well, but could see no traces. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Rood Well
Rood Well submitted by Anne T : The set of steps leading down to the well chamber itself. As the well is closely surrounded on three sides by a stone wall with a freshly ploughed field beyond, it was a little difficult (for me) to photograph the well structure as a whole. Rood Well
Rood Well submitted by Anne T : The well is right by the western side of the B6370, below the current ground level. A well kept set of steps leads down to the well chamber itself.

Rood Well
Rood Well submitted by rogerkread : The attractive well building as it appears on the approach from Dunbar, in its enclosing wall and garden.

Rood Well
Rood Well submitted by rogerkread : Peeping through between the cage bars - moist rather than actively flowing.

Rood Well
Rood Well submitted by KiwiBetsy : It is enclosed by a small circular building with a doorway on which is a locked grill. The conical stone roof is topped by a flowered finial which is said to have come from the church and may date from the 14th century. The present wellhouse has a plaque stating that it is a '16th century historic building'. A path used to run from the well to the church but now seems to have disappeared.

I visited the Rood Well a couple of summers ago. It's very easy to stop on the roadside and get a good view of the wellhouse. On both my visits, however, it was completely dry and I couldn't see any evidence of water having run there recently.
