Valley of Stones circle submitted by Postman : Another entrance look-a-like. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Possible large stone circle in the south-easterly section of the Valley of Stones in Dorset. Gerald Ponting writes: When I went down there I became convinced that this was a genuine megalithic circle. As far as I know, there seems no record of this as an archaeological site - unless you know better.

Several years ago there was talk of a very well off farmer/ landowner having had two circles built, one on his land between Corfe and Swanage near his Manor house which cannot be seen from any public place, but also one somewhere out in the open which I have never been able to find.

I have heard some talk that this could be a medieaval sheepfold. I suppose the intention may have been (if it is a circle) to be viewed from above along the track that now holds the top of the valley which could have been the original ridgeway route to Abbotsbury. The poor lot cemetary is in a similar valley floor location and was clearly intended to be viewed from above as travellers descended from the old ridgeway now the a35. The nearby hampton down circle is also comprised of probably smaller stones than V.O.S.
I wonder what the experts think?

I visited the sight last week to see the circle for myself. Walking along the east valley edge the Circle was very visible, and far more obvious than from the road.

The sides of the stones on the up side of the valley had more soil stacked against them, up to one foot difference to the lower side, suggesting the stones have been there some time. Although the old field boundaries nearby seem to have allot larger height (2-3 foot) differences. This would either mean the circle stone have not been in place for as long a time as the fields hedges were, or the field boundaries I could see are reminisces of built up terraces, or I've completely misinterpreted these "field boundary" features.

Inside the west side of the circle are several large stones. I wondered if they could have been internal structure like those you can see at stone henge. Among these is one large slab that could be described as an altar stone.

It did not have the "feel" of other stone circles I have been to, like nine stones. If it is an ancient stone circle I wonder why the stones don’t stand higher. Would someone have taken the trouble to knock them down or break them up for stone, in a field full of other stones, where clearance would be impossible?

My partner suggested it is possible that the circle was created by selective removal of stone from the centre of the circle, and an incomplete job resulting in the jumble of stones on the west inside of the circle.

I'd love to hear other impressions of this hidden circle.
