Unravel visited on 17th Jan 2026 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 3 Access: 2 As suggested by English Heritage we parked on Longlands Lane (plenty of space on the verge), close to the Portesham junction and followed the public footpath, part of which is the Jubilee trail in the direction of West Hill Farm. It's about a mile walk along tracks and across farm land. Luckily no cattle were grazing. The barrows spread across both sides of the A35 and there are some amazing shapes, especially the disc barrow. It was a bleak winters day so we didn't feel the full ambience, but I imagine it would be beautiful in spring or summer. If the ground is dry you could sit awhile with a cup of tea and really enjoy the site and surrounding landscape.

Barrow Cemetery of bowl, bell, pond and disk barrows in Dorset

Poor Lot Barrows Dorset :SY589907,SY 592908, SY591,906

Forty four barrows located in this area located between Winterbourne Abbas, Kingstone Russell and Little Bredy. Near the A35 (south side) there are 20 bowl barrows, e.g. a superb ditched bowl barrow 40.3m diam. 3.7m high next to a disc barrow. Further barrows located up the hillside, and in field on the N side of the road.  [ref.  L. V. Grinsel Dorset Barrows 1959]

Access The site is owned by English Heritage with free entry at any reasonable time (whatever that means). The entrance is not at all obvious: the EH website describes it as "access via Wellbottom Lodge - 180 metres along A35 from junction (ref SY 590906)". From the A35 you go up a driveway (its a bridleway too) for about 20m and where it turns to the left there is a small wooden gate directly ahead of you. Parking is nearly impossible - don't do anything dangerous or illegal.

Poor Lot Barrows
Poor Lot Barrows submitted by Bladup : In this lidar image take a Look at the stunning amount of (mostly ploughed out) barrows to the north of The Poor Lot Barrow Group (In the blue circle at the bottom of the image), I think it's safe to say this was once a nationally important burial ground, Maybe even an important european burial ground, As the amount of barrows here seem far more than needed for the few folks that lived around here... Poor Lot Barrows submitted by TimPrevett : Sunset 26/11/20 at the Poor Lot Barrows. Best point of access is from the south east, considerate parking near a junction, and then following the Jubilee Trail signs north west ish. Spoke (distantly) with a man from the adjoining property who confirmed this was the best point of access. Photo on iPhone 11.

Poor Lot Barrows
Poor Lot Barrows submitted by TimPrevett : Attempted visit 13/08/17; this site is nigh on inaccessible from the roadside, only previously having visited from paths from the ridgeway. It's very frustrating not having better access to what is really quite a magnificent barrow cemetery. Looking to access from the layby, there is none from the roadside, and it's a very fast, dangerous road with no pedestrian access. If anything, I did end up g...
