At Yarborough farm in the bowl of the Lox Yeo Valley there stands the most impressive of West Mendip’s stones - the eight foot high Wook’s Quoit. The unpublished
topography of John Strachey (1730) is the earliest written account of the stone, which he calls “Wooks Cait” so-called because of its relation to ‘ye fabled gyant inhabiting
Wookey Hole’ (10) further east along the Mendip ridge. Judging by other giant-and-stone tales Wook presumably threw it from the hill either in a fit of rage or in a trial of strength with some other folkhero.

The latter is the more probable for some 350m to the east another stone was marked on the 1882 Ordnance Survey map, although this has since disappeared. Wook’s Quoit stands in stark profile with the distinctive hilltop of Crook Peak, the most unusual of
Mendip’s hills which suddenly attenuates to a sharp pointed summit. There is certain
ly a skyline correspondence between the two but it seems to go no further than a recognition of the shape of the peak itself and any other connection with the remainder of the hill is firmly in the eye of the beholder.

Rescued comment from Hamish

First mention of the stone by John Stratchey in 1730, it was known by the name of "Wook's Cait".
It is not easy to find but once you are at the Yarberry farm ask the land owner for permission. There are guardian geese here who do not like intruders so be careful. The farmer/wife said that a lot of dowsers visit who report all sorts of results. The site seems to align with Wimblestone , the lost circle of Chew and eventually Stanton Drew. If you can locate it it's well worth a look.
