Wapley Hill large multivallate hillfort in Herefordshire, 150m north of Warren House. There is a steep defensive slope running along the northern face of the fort and huge banks and ditches clearly visible to the east. Also four pillow mounds.

This site is scheduled as Historic England List ID 1011017 (

My partner and I made the climb from the Mortimer Forest trail and it was well worth the effort we were there in May 2008 and were lucky enough to be there at a time when it was probably at it's best . There were many varieties of wild flower growing on the top, the colours intermingling with the varied shades of green were an artists dream I only wish I could paint. We will most certainly make a return visit in spring 2009.

The camp uses the natural steep scarp slope for defence on the north side. To the south there are five ramparts and ditches, three being medial ditches, before the broad open area of the camp. The defences apparently cover a greater area than the central encampment.

On the western side of the fort there is a well in a small marshy pond. The date of the well is unknown. It is similar to ritual shafts found in Europe dating back to the Bronze Age, one is present on Salisbury Plain. Another theory is that it is a sacred well of the Roman-Celtic period. The presence of the four unexcavated “pillow mounds” would indicate an Iron Age sacred enclosure.

Good example of a hillfort, when the grass is cut the impressive ramparts and entrance are just great
