There is a fascinating link between the Stone Circle at Bannishead and the Winter Solstice.
If one stands behind the tallest stone of the circle on 21st December (on a clear day) and looks towards the Eastern horizon, it will be seen that the sun rises immediately behind a large rock on top of the moorland. That rock, about the size of an average chair, lying on its back, is quite solitary and appears to have been placed there deliberately. One can only imagine how the ancient Brits, who lived at Bannihead, may have taken several years to ascertain the precise spot to place that marker so that they would know when the annual solstice occurred. It took me a few years to establish it because of the cloud cover and/or fog that often obscured the skyline.

Very interesting observation. Is this the stone you mean outside the circle, Mike?

Admin note - no idea why all the comments are headed Banniside when the site name is Banishead. The link to the old document, by KenMP on Friday, 18 October 2019, mentions 'Banniside Moor as the circle's location.

"ART. XVIII.—An Exploration of the Circle on Banniside Moor, Coniston. By W. G. COLLINGWOOD, M.A., F.S.A. Read in part at Carlisle, April 15th, and in part on the Site, September 10th, 1909. D R. Alexander Craig Gibson, F.S.A., late of Coniston, wrote a sketch often quoted as a good example of the dialect of High Furness, under the title of The Bannasyde Cairns. "

    Hello KenMP,
Yes I understand the site was previously excavated and a cremation was found under the central cairn.
I didn't however know that the slabs had been re-positioned upright at the west end. Thank you for this article.
