Crug Hywel submitted by TheCaptain : Crug Hywel, Hillfort in Powys, SO226207 While on a stone hunting day in and around the Black Mountains, the murk on the hills cleared enough for me to get this picture of the Crug Hywel, or Table Mountain fort from near the Llangenny Stones - which I didnt find. Crug Hywel submitted by pab : The top of the hillfort is as level as the name Table Mountain suggests - as seen in this picture looking across the 'tabletop' towards the Sugar Loaf lit up by the rising sun. In case anyone thinks I trecked too far for this dawn shot, we had a 20-strong family party staying in a converted 16th Century Longhouse on the slopes just below Table Mountain! What a way to have spent the Easter Week... (1 comment - Vote or comment on this photo)

Crug Hywel submitted by Horatio : looking north and showing the vast rubble field from the fallen walls on the southern and western ramparts, almost like a scree field but unlike scree this was all all 'hand balled'. If you have ever walked up to this fort it's a lung buster walk up, even when you're just bellow the ramparts so it really puts it into perspective what our ancestors had to do to build this. The site of Crug Hywel played a part in the 'invasion' by Henry tudur, Earl of Richmond in August 1485, on his route to the Battle at Bosworth field.
According to the book 'Visitation of Wales', by Lewys Dunne, lately Bishop of Bangor in 1688 on the orders of Queen Elizabeth I, Volume II, page 51 (in the reprint for Queen Victoria in 1846, the men of Rees ap Thomas, from Carmarthen erected a Standard of Henry Tudor at Crug Hywel to guide the men from Monmouth (under Sir William Herbert) to their meeting point at LLanddew (north of Brecon) where another Standard was erected. This is why the road at Crug Hywel is known as Standard Street.The meeting point also had his Standard, and is know as the Standell.
