St Andrew's Well (Stogursey)

Holy Well in Somerset. Down this side lane one is greeted with the most impressive structure surrounding a Holy Well in Somerset. One enters a large archway into a forecourt where two small 'brick huts' are apparent (now with windows) within which apparently the waters arise and perhaps custodians sat.

The water emerges beneath these 'huts' a series of three pipes. Two to the left and one to the right. There water gushes out at some force filling stone throughs and then draining away. The village itself has a delightful church with a pleisosaur!

Being a resident of Stogursey (notice no R in the middle - corrected Ed.), we always drank from the well, then we we're told in the 70's not to drink as it's unfit for human consumption. Personally i love the taste!!!

We drive out from Bridgwater every ten days or so to fill bottles and have been using this well for all of our drinking water for eight years.
Certainly no ill effects..........Yet!!

My partner and I visited in 2008 and found this running enthusiastically, possibly due to the recent wet summers. As we were standing about admiring the water flow, and wondering if something like this was still safe to drink, one of the locals came with bottles and filled them up. She said they were having a children's party and had just run out of water to dilute the squash and had come to get some more. Heartened by this we also had a glassful. You can certainly taste the chalybeate although its not as strongly 'diluted rusty nails' as the Red Well at Glastonbury.
