Stone Circle in Perthshire. The B947 runs west from Blairgowrie towards Lethendy, straight through the circle! The road is marked and there are warning signs for those too unobservant to spot the stones. Burl records that the road was laid in 1856.

Beware of traffic, clearly - it's no doubt a little faster now than it was then! There are six stones on the circle, which is approximately 48 feet in diameter. The ring is graded to the south-west, with that stone being 1.8m high, the tallest. The western stone and the the most north-easterly were moved to make way for the road, and the southernmost stone was broken during the road-making. It was banded with iron and set in concrete.

Burl also records that the alternative name for this site, the Leys of Marlee, is an anglicised corruption of mor liae, the great stones.

RCAHMS record this site under the name "Leys of Marlee", with alternative names "Blairgowrie", "Leys" and "Essendy Road". The name "Ardblair" is logical because it pertains to nearby land but why is "Mor Liae" given as an alternative? Burl's suggestion that "Marlee" may be derived from "mor liae" is no more than a guess and does not justify quoting it as if it were a real name.

Hilary McColl writes: A few months ago a subgroup of the Blairgowrie, Rattray and District Local History Trust was formed to research and photograph Neolithic and Bronze Age sites situated within a radius of eight miles around Blairgowrie town centre, and to visit museums that hold prehistoric artefacts uncovered within in the same area.

The resulting posters and albums can be viewed in in Blairgowrie Library during April 2013.

Not all local finds are in museums, we discovered. Some are in private hands, and some are now lost. We are hoping that the exhibition will encourage people with further information to contact us via the Library and help us to make the collection an on-going resource.
