Huly Hill Cairn
Huly Hill Cairn submitted by cosmic : Site in West Lothian Scotland: Tumulus from East (Vote or comment on this photo)
Large Tumulus with retaining wall. near site of standing stones. The site is located across the road from a petrol station on the west side of the junction of the A8 and the M8/M9 motorway, just west of Edinburgh Airport.

It should be classified as a tumulus / barrow as it is composed chiefly of earth. It is enclosed by a modern wall, some 30m in diameter and rises to a height of 3m.

The three Huly Hill standing stones -- named A, B and C -- immediately adjacent, may be the remains of a stone circle around the tumulus. "A" is 53m east of the cairn and stands about 1.3m high, though appears to have been broken; "B" is 49m south west of the cairn and 2m high; and "C" is 31m north west of the cairn and 2m high.

On an industrial estate 320m to the east of the tumulus, east of the motorway, stands "Stone D", which is 3m high -- this could be an outlier of the monument or simply a separate standing stone.

The Canmore record for Canmore site no. 50795 gives details for both the standing stones and the cairn.

Any suggestions as to what "Huly" might mean? Is there a Gaelic word that might be anglicised to holy or huly?
