Banc y Celyn submitted by cerrig : This is looking east, in the general direction of the Malverns. If you look very carefully, right in the centre of the image, is a face. It turned up just after dawn, watched me for a while, and then disappeared. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Oval in Powys

Circle diameter: 62 by 52 feet, Number of stones: 5
This is a complex arrangement of four obvious stones and one possible stub. One 4-foot stone lies on its side and, together with another two, would form a rectangle. But another 4-foot stones lies flat at the N.

geoffstickland added:
A Bronze Age Stone Circle, much reduced through lamination and natural erosion, on the side of Pant y Celyn mountain. Set in the grass, an oval of about 60' at its longest point. Sources state that there are 24 stones of which about 13 are still visible (after a careful search). To the E side are 2 stones set at 90 degrees to the rest, suggesting an entrance to the circle. The site enjoys inspiring views.

There is a suggestion that the Circle predates the Bronze Age

Banc y Celyn
Banc y Celyn submitted by cerrig : This is the largest upright, about knee high. There is an almost identical stone to this in Cerrig Duon circle, and in the same north west position of the circle. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Banc y Celyn submitted by cerrig : This is the table top stone again, and Mother Nature just plain showing off in the background. None of these photo's could do justice to the spectacle I have witnessed here today. This stone circle could never be described as impressive, like most welsh circles, but catch it in the right mood and it gives a good account of itself. A bit out of the way, but only a 20 minute walk from the car over f... (1 comment - Vote or comment on this photo)

Banc y Celyn
Banc y Celyn submitted by cerrig : This stone lies just to the west of the circle, and although not listed as belonging, I have included it here. It is about the size of a small kitchen table, approx 4 feet across, with what looks like a ditch surrounding it. At first I though it may be just sheep type erosion, but the ditch is completely grass covered and not worn at all, unlike the usual muddy tracks made by Shawn and co. Banc y Celyn
Banc y Celyn submitted by cerrig : This is the exploded stone, showing the spread of debris, some bits a couple of feet away. There's cold and then there's cold, this must have been beyond cold. It's curious though, even with all the frost about, around the base of the stone theres nothing, just a ring of unfrozen grass, but only on this one stone. This picture taken before the sun had shown itself. (7 comments)

Banc y Celyn Stone Circle
Banc y Celyn Stone Circle submitted by geoffstickland : The largest of the visible stones. Clearly greatly laminated.

Banc y Celyn Stone Circle
Banc y Celyn Stone Circle submitted by geoffstickland : Please excuse this Pythonesque picture but, with a walker on each of the visible stones, it gives some idea of the arrangement of the remaining visible stones.

Banc y Celyn
Banc y Celyn submitted by cerrig : This shows one of the few remaining stones and may shed some light on the whereabouts of the missing ones. I have seen small bits broken off stones due to frost before but I have never seen one that has exploded like this one.

Banc y Celyn
Banc y Celyn submitted by cerrig : Looking South East, Jan 2010, towards Hay Bluff in the Black Mountains, and Blaenau stone circle. In the South East corner of the circle is the classic Beacons slab type structure, now collapsed and grassed over. The orientation, as with all the Beacons circles, is to the Winter Solstice sunrise direction. This circle was only discovered in the early 1990's, probably due to it's remoteness and la...
