Anne T saw from a distance on 31st Oct 2018 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 4 Carleith Cairn (Crook of Devon): We didn’t go into the field as there were two very boisterous young bullocks who crowded the gate, along with their protective mothers, so I photographed it mainly from the gate into the field. From the edge of the field, this looked almost completely round, and I would have loved to have walked over it. The view to the distant hills was lovely.

Cairn in Perth and Kinross

Recorded as Canmore ID 49662, their 1948 entry says: "In the middle of Carleith are the ruins of an old building, perfectly circular, and nearly 24ft in diameter. Not long ago, the proprietor ordered this ground to be planted, and the stones were dug up to make a dyke. Two stone coffins were found each 4ft. long by 3ft. broad, and contained some human bones and teeth."

A more up-to-date entry from 1990 adds:"This cairn is situated on a natural knoll enclosed by a drystone wall. It measures 9m in diameter overall and has a cist at its centre. A well defined robber trench marks the line of a kerb around the edge of the cairn. Three kerb stones are visible on the SE arc, one of which may be in situ and measures 1m in length. The cist has side slabs visible on its NE and NW sides and measures at least 1m in length from NE to SW. A large stone, which appears to have been split recently, sits within the area of the cist. There is a large beech tree growing out of the centre of the cairn, and around the SW arc there are traces of shallow furrows about 1m apart, presumably the result of cultivation."

The Northern Antiquarian (TNA) also features a page on this site - see their entry for Carlieth, Crook of Devon, Kinross-shire. TNA give directions on how to find this cairn, together with a brief archaeology and history and a photograph of the cairn. They also add some folklore, which says a legendary witch (Meg of Aldie) was said to frequent an old site close by - perhaps this cairn!

Carleith (Crook of Devon)
Carleith (Crook of Devon) submitted by Anne T : The cairn as seen from the gate into the field. The two very lively young bullocks were right next to me, trying to grab the camera to eat, with their very protective mothers nearby, staring at me. Hence we only saw this cairn from a distance!
