markj99 visited on 18th Apr 2011 Hwylfa’r Ceirw Stone Alignment was one of my rare accidental finds. While exploring a ruined footprint of a building on Great Orme my eye was drawn to the S Terminus of the stone row. I followed it downhill towards Marine Drive. The majority of the stones in the row are small however it is a significant presence in its landscape.

Stone Row / Alignment in Conwy (Bwrdeistref Sirol). Hwylfa’r Ceirw (The Path of the Deer) is a double avenue of mostly small water worn limestone boulders running for approximately 100m towards the sea on the Great Orme. Legend has it that this is the track by which deer ascended the Orme when there was dry land at the foot of the headland and not sea as today. The age of the rows is difficult to ascertain, they are listed by CARN as prehistoric, but other sources suggest a more recent origin. The stones are situated almost directly below the well at Ffynnon Rufeinig (Roman Well), a copper ore washing site, which may prove, as have the Great Orme Mines, to date to the Bronze Age, rather than being of Roman origin. Although classified by CARN under the heading of religious, ritual & funerary monuments the proximity to Ffynnon Rufeinig suggests the theory that the rows could mark an old route by which copper ore was taken down to the coast for export. Another possibility is that the stones indicated an entrance to a safe harbour for the return of fishing boats; the white limestone would have been clearly visible from the sea.
