SandyG visited on 2nd Oct 2016 - their rating: Cond: 4 Amb: 4 Access: 4 Car parking is available at NN 75268 00334. From here enter the field to the east. The row will soon appear on the skyline. This row is situated in an arable field and therefore access is not normally available during the spring and summer months.

A Row of Four Stones (Alignment) in Stirlingshire with cup marked stone

This monument is recorded as Canmore ID 24689 which tells us there are three upright stones and one prostrate. The central stones has 23 cup marks on its level top.

Their most recent entry, from 1978, records: "This alignment of three standing stones runs from NNE to 55W over a distance of about 9m; the central stone is cup-marked, measuring 1.2m in height, and it is flanked by two leaning stones which would measure about 2m high if upright. The status of a recumbent block at the N end of the alignment is unclear, but it may have split off the northernmost stone."

The Northern Antiquarian (TNA) also feature a page for this stone row - see their entry for Glenhead Stone Row, Doune, Perthshire, which gives directions for finding the site, photographs and a brief archaeology & history.

More information can be found on The Stone Rows of Great Britain - see their page for Doune (Glenhead) which includes a description, photographs, a plan of the alignment made from a recent survey in October 2016, and access information. The SRoGB notes: "This row is situated in an arable field and therefore access is not normally available during the spring and summer months"

Doune (Glenhead) submitted by hamish : Quite easy to find and park, look for the SAS monument it's just by this. An alignment of 4 stones 1 of which is fallen. It had been raining before I got here, by the time I recaged the stones I was about 3ins taller. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Doune (Glenhead)
Doune (Glenhead) submitted by SandyG : View from north west (Scale 1m). The stone on the left would have originally stood much higher before it was split. This would have meant that the row would have mimicked the Dunyak Peaks beyond. If so this might suggest the end stones always leaned. 2 October 2016.

Doune (Glenhead) submitted by rogerkread : The stones appear raised on a mound, presumably the result of adjacent ploughing.

I visited Glenhead this past summer, but couldn't access it because of the field of rape taller than my head! I went there today, however, mid-winter, and had no problem accessing it at all. It's a magnificent site with 360Âș views; and an especially good view of Dumyat to the east. The cup stone is astounding.
