Trichrug submitted by sem : Sole Survivor The last remaining of 3 cairns. The others were used to build the wall! This shot is looking E, but the view to the S shows 12 cairns on the horizon - pure magic! (Vote or comment on this photo)
Originally three cairns, two have been robbed out to build the overlying wall.

RCAHMW (NPRN304034) give it's class and period as unknown. However to the south 12 cairns of the Carmarthen Fans stand out on the horizon, suggesting this is contemporary with them (ie Bronze Age).

Trichrug submitted by sem : What the Giant saw A panorama of the view South from Trichrug suggests the giant was able to throw ten piles of pebbles to perfectly place them on the horizon. http://www.megalithic.co.uk/article.php?sid=31278 From Deg Arbedd, when looking North, ten piles of pebbles (cairns) are also visible. Interesting things are giants!?!

Trichrug has an interesting legend attached to it, it was once the home of a giant who was the pebble throwing champion of Wales. The legend of the giant was recorded by Wirt Sykes in his 1880 publication "British Goblins: Welsh Folk-lore, Fairy Mythology, Legends and Traditions". Mr Sykes, who was the United States Consul for Wales based in Cardiff, recounts the giant's feats - "The giant of Trichrug, (a fairy haunt in Cardiganshire,) appears to have been the champion pebble-tosser of Wales, if local legend may be trusted. Having invited the neighbouring giants to try their strength with him in throwing stones, he won the victory by tossing a huge rock across the sea into Ireland."
Legends may not be historically accurate but a visit to Trichrug will provide two pieces of evidence in support of the giant. Looking south from here (picture below) reveals twelve cairns on the horizon - obviously all piles of stones thrown by him! They are Carnau'r Carreg Las (x2), Cefn Truman, Garreg Lwyd, Carn Pen Rhiw Ddu, Carn Pen y Clogau, Tair Carn Uchaf (x3) and Tair Carn Isaf (x3). Secondly, the Irish had established territories here after the decline of Rome - the Kingdom of Brycheiniog (Brecon) is thought to have been founded by Irish invaders in the late 5th Century AD - so he didn't have to throw the pebbles as far as the legend suggests.
Here we have a case of fact being stranger than fiction, that Bronze Age man could build a series of cairns that were all visible on an horizon from a single point up to six miles away - or is it more likely that the three cairns of Trichrug were built later when someone noticed the cairns on the horizon?

A little research reveals that a giant once lived on Trichrug who was the pebble throwing champion of Wales. This may explain all the "piles of pebbles" on the horizon.
