Ancient Village or Settlement in Conwy
Situated on NW sloping ground within a high moorland that's nestled between the summits of Gallt Yr Ogof (763m) to the NW and Cefn y Capel (460m) to the SE the site is not the easiest to reach. The settlement site shares this location with a burial cairn, and a medieval long house a little further down the valley indicating multiple occupancy of what would today be considered a harsh environment.
The settlement consists of two probable hut circles within a few metres of each other. The largest presents as a raised platform that accommodated a 6m diameter hut circle. The second measures about 4m but looked more like a cairn at first glance. However, I've erred on the side of hut circle following some research on the Gwynedd Archaeological Trust website.
There is possible evidence of an enclosure associated with the nearby cairn and I noted a clearing on higher ground that may also be associated with this settlement?
As stated this environment is quite challenging to reach. However, I chose the route from the car park at Capel Curig (behind Joe Browns) along the old turnpike road to the Ogwen Valley. Then I followed the Nant y Gors (stream) towards the site.
