Ring Cairn on the slopes of Moel Goedog, Marion writes: I just visited this favourite circle of mine and I was so sad to see that the plough has been taken so close to it. This is a comparison of this year's visit to last year's visit .

"A circle of originally 12 upright stones, up to 1.0m high, 6.5-7.0m in diameter: excavation, 1978, showed that the stones were set in a low stone bank & enclosed a complex of pits, three of which contained BA urns, two, including the primary feature, containing a cremation deposit assemblages: a second, superficially similar feature lies some 44m to the west."

Update October 2019: This is the western terminal cairn of the Fonllech Stone Row, featured on the Stone Rows of Great Britain website. The SRoGB entry includes a description, a plan of the row and its terminal cairns, photographs of the alignment, its individual stones and its terminal cairns, plus access information and links to other online resources for more information.

Note: Rather too close ploughing at Moel Goedog W cairn circle - surely this is going into the scheduled area? More photos on our main page.

One of the urns found here is now on display at Bangor Storiel Museum http://collections.storiel.cymru/
It is fascinating, as it has cracked during the original firing, so two holes have been drilled to enable a chord to be inserted to secure the side. There is also a video about Moel Goedog W, narrated by archaeologist Frances Lynch describing the excavation and the urns.

This year's visit to Moel Geodog West surprised (shocked?) me as it appears the plough has been taken very, very close to the stones. A lot of new clearance work has been done in this field. A digger is visible on the far side of the field and stones have been piled up, in the centre in a line, and a pile at the back. I don't know if this clearance arrangement is new or not, but there is a young crop growing now, not the usual grass. It's possibly sugar beet - but the sheep are currently eating it. Reading the older comments here, it appears this lovely cairn circle has a history of damage. I've just referred to my copy of "A guide to Ancient and Historic Wales - Gwynedd" by Frances Lynch. There is a good bit of information about this cairn on page 49 and the cut away diagram shows the cairn extending almost 3 meters outside the uprights. I think the plough has been closer than that.

Hello Marion, thanks for the extra info - would you mind reporting this to RCAHMW with links to your photos - judging by the comments below there have been issues before at this site: https://rcahmw.gov.uk/about-us/contact-us/

This is awful news - the circle was a delight. This is not the first time an ancient structure has been knowingly destroyed by farmers in Gwynedd. A concerted effort is obviously needed - including perhaps the Farmers Union of Wales who have a county network and might be helpful in reminding their members of responsibilities etc. Not the only route to follow - but one not to be overlooked perhaps.

In the meantime, I will post the pictures I took of this circle last September (while staying ironically enough at a farm just along the lane....).

The point of posting them is for there to be a readily accessible record of how they looked - I will be posting more photos than I would just for a site visit etc, but hope they might be useful for Portal Members and others in the area to use to get this put right... If anyone wants better resolution versions or my full set, please send me a PM..

As far as I understand with my poor English the initial comment does not mention any damage of the circle itself except for the addition of a stone?

Martin - your grasp of what was said was much sharper than mine - perhaps having to read the English slowly might have been a better approach for me to take before thinking that the whole circle had been cleared!

I think I will call the local farmer tomorrow to let him know of the concerns - I happen to have his number, and it might be easier than one of his neighbours doing it...I will read the original post more carefully before doing so though...

I wonder if Portal member Talsarnau_Times has seen the string - I will PM him in case..he knows the area very well..

Re: Moel Goedog W by Anonymous on Wednesday, 20 June 2012
Not sure who to contact so help. Have been using the portal to plan walks to ancient sites. On 17th June went up to Moel Goedig above Harlech. The field below the Hill Fort has been destroyed by the farmer. The grass has been poisoned and all the stones of any size have been arranged in a 21century cairn in the middle of the field.

The cairn circle although left has been removed from the 2000bc landscape and a boulder of several tons tipped on one corner of the circle clearly out of context making a welsh recumbent circle! A standing stones stands forelornly in the bottom corner in the mud. The field to the west is as yet untouched but could be next. I was very upset by the destruction of part of an ancient landscape- can anyone do anything?

Hello Tim, this sounds awful - I've passed your message on to the RCAHMW here http://www.rcahmw.gov.uk/HI/ENG/About+Us/Contact+Us/ but if anyone else has any more ideas let us know

Tim has sent the following update: After several emails and a telephone call a member of the Gwynedd Archeological Trust has visited the site and I have been told by a member of CADW that they will be visiting the site this week and discussing matters with the owner.

They will not be able to give me more details - presumably legal action may be in the line.
Thank you for pointing me in the right direction.
