Puidrac Standing Stone
Puidrac Standing Stone submitted by custer : Looking south a recent edition is the well worn river boulder. This ties into the description of the puderag stone on the RCAHMS site. Site in Perth and Kinross Scotland (Vote or comment on this photo)
Standing Stone in Perth and Kinross. This stone is not visible from the road. The road to Balquhidder is single track with passing places, very quiet. Parking is available at the village hall who ask for a small donation.

Walking back up the road passed a ruined church and Rob Roys grave there is a small wood south of the road follow the wall down through a quite boggy field until you come to a small fenced off area where the stone is found. At the time of my visit this area had been used to hold livestock and the ground was well dug up. The round boulder appears to have been added recently to support the story of its use as a demonstration of strength lifting the boulder onto the top of the standing stone.

For more information see Canmore ID 24141, which records a report from 1887: "A standing stone stands about 4 1/2feet above ground, below Tom na Croich, Balquhidder. It is wedge-shaped, quite flat on top, and was famous as the place where trials of strength took place. A large, round, water-worn boulder, named, after the district, 'Puderag', weighing 2-3cwt., had to be lifted and placed on top of the standing stone. The latter had a ledge on its east side which was used as a resting-place in the lift but it was broken off c.30 years ago. A former minister of the parish is reputed to have had the lifting-stone thrown into the river, due to the danger of the feat, but it is also said to have been built into the manse dyke." In 1968, an entry records: "This stone, oriented E-W, is 1.25m high, 0.9m wide and from 0.2m to 0.4m thick."

The Northern Antiquarian (TNA) also features a page for this standing stone - see their entry for Puidrac, Balquhidder, Perthshire, which gives directions for finding this stone, together with photographs, a brief archaeology & history and local folklore.

I have visited Balquidder often but did not know about the Puidric stone.I will find it next time.Did you know that the church was the first parish of the Rev.Robert Kirk.1640-1692.His first wife,s grave is in the churchyard.Kirk was a Gaelic latin & Greek scholar who wrote "The secret commonwealth of elves fauns & fairies".The original manuscript was discovered by Sir Walter Scott. This book &Kirks life are often Quoted by writers on Alien Abduction.Kirk moved from Balquidder to Aberfoyle where he was said to have been abducted by fairies (aliens) because he disclosed their secrets. He "died" out walking on the fairy Knowe just outside Aberfoyle, and is "buried" in the churchyard there.Sometimes the ambience in the Trossachs is so good that I almost believe it!
