Thurba Fort
Thurba Fort submitted by pab : The main defensive ditch/rampart - this view is looking south-east, with a 50m+ drop from the edge. The line of cliffs is along the Gower coastline, looking towards Paviland. Photo taken July 2011, so the level of vegetation will probably be similar for the Portal walk on the weekend of 20th/21st July 2013 for the Festival of Archaeology. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Thurba Fort
Thurba Fort submitted by pab : View from Thurba Head hillfort, looking west over Mewslade Bay - with Worms Head indicated. This is a relatively easy circular walk from the Visitor Centre at Rhossili, where the Portal Walks will be based on 20th/21st July 2013 Photo taken July 2011 (Vote or comment on this photo)

Thurba Fort
Thurba Fort submitted by pab : Several 'features' are visible on the main Thurba Head. This may well be newer than megalithic, & is possibly part of the former lime kiln shown on detailed COFLEIN maps. Certainly did not seem natural - worth someone looking more closely and arguing for this image to be removed...! Photo taken July 2011 (Vote or comment on this photo)

Situated just off the Gower Coastal Path, this defended enclosure occupies a good site with excellent views along the cliffs. A good option for the Portal Walks in July 2013!

COFLEIN describes the location as follows:

"Thurba Camp is a defensive complex set about a central enclosure c.50m by 40m perched on an irregular coastal promontory, defined by precipitous cliffs except where a stone-faced wall/rampart faces NE across the promontory isthmus, with two widely spaced lines of bank & ditch beyond , the outer having a c.90m frontage.
Up to seven circular structures have been noted associated with the central enclosure, although the site as a whole is obscurred by lime workings."

There are good aerial images available on COFLEIN
